Studio Curtain DIY
*** DISCLAIMER ***
… i am NOT a seamstress … ‘like most days struggle to thread the needle on my sewing machine’ not a seamstress …
… but i own TWO sewing machines and a serger (also that i struggle to thread) … tho, i seem to be able to sew paper on a layout like nobody’s business …
… having said ALL that, i try and i get better every time … and i have a fabulous Pinterest board full of things i would love to sew one day … you know, like when i actually learn how to sew 😉
… good thing that for this SUPER cute project, there was minimal sewing involved … AND thankfully my Mother kindly came over to both thread my machine AND sew the straight lines for me while i got these DIY curtains ready (thanks Mom 🙂 )
I found these adorable sheer chevron patterned curtains for sale (i love a good deal) on Wayfair and scooped them up quick … they weren’t the right length but had the most adorable scalloped bottom and i knew they’d be perfect for the project i had in mind for the 2 windows in my studio space …
The first step was to cut the appropriate length off the TOP of these curtains – remember that i wanted to keep the BOTTOM pretty scallops so my measurements were from the TOP …
… i used my trusty old school yard stick – this has lived in my craft space for years … you have no idea how much i use this for SO many things – anyhoo, it was great for serving as a straight edge to cut the top off of each of the 4 curtains …
Once i had the appropriate amount cut off the top, my Mom and i tag teamed this part – she pinned and i ironed … the ironing was important (and not just because my Mom and i both are OBSESSED with ironing) … but we wanted to be sure that when we went to sew the edges that they stayed exactly where we wanted them to be …
… and i will say that while i was super thankful to have my Moms help with this (she is MUCH more handy with the sewing machine than i am) … it for SURE is a project that you do not need to be able to sew to do …
… in fact you could VERY easily use double sided sewing tape for this part too … so if you don’t have a sewing machine, or really don’t feel like tackling it this way … you could make it work without a machine no problem !!
After we had the seams all sewn and the pins removed, i ironed them again just for good measure … i also needed them to be quite ‘stiff’ (not starch stiff) but enough that the seams would fold back and forth on themselves well …
… for each fold i wanted them to be 1” wide and folded into 3’s … and yes i did actually measure each one – remember fairly Type A over here – again, i kept the iron on and close by as once i had each of these sections measured and folded, i ironed these little guys too …
Once each one had been measured, folded and ironed, i was ready to clip each one to hang …
… i used the DIGNITET rod from IKEA as my ‘rod’ and the RIKTIG hooks are from IKEA as well (click to find the link to each product) …
These were PERFECT and of course matched another cool project in my studio that i will FINALLY share next week in my final studio post !!
… i have to say that tho these curtains provide absolutely no practical purpose (not my intention for them anyway) they look adorable and are exactly the finishing touch my new window frames needed !!
REMEMBER – you could do this same process on larger curtains for any space, width or length … i hope this inspires you to grab something from the clearance section and make it UH-MAZING in your own home !!
